Mercenaries on Chainbreaker are fully custom.

Creation

Mercenaries are actually your alts (alternate characters) that you've created from the character selection screen. You can create a total of three characters on your account and choose one (and only one) at a time to join you as a hired mercenary.

Choosing Your Mercenary

Should you want to "hire" your mercenary or switch to a different merc from your account list you may visit the Portal. You must return to the portal to swap to a different merc; you cannot switch while adventuring.

Merc Swap

You can swap between your active character and your currently active mercenary by using the UI option for mercenary swapping. This should be mostly instant, but it cannot be performed while in combat.

Mercenary Loadout

Swap to your mercenary to set up your mercenary's spells and equipment. Your merc will use the memorized spells and abilities you assign to its spellbar to fight alongside you. Mercenaries will always cast spells from the 1st gem slot down. If you want your Merc to always cast heals on you before all other spells, place that spell in Gem slot 1, if you want it to lead every engagement with a slow, put that in gem slot 1 and a heal in slot 2. Etc. Your Merc will always cast buffs as soon as they have faded as long as you are not in combat. A good rule of thumb is to put buffs towards the bottom of the gem list that way your Offensive and Defensive spells are further up the logic chain when casting in combat. There is a limited Mercenary AI that will take over your alts. It’s smart, but actual players are smarter.

Merc Stances

You can set your Merc as Passive or Aggressive at any time you would like. If your merc is set to passive even during combat it will only try to cast beneficial spells like healing and buffing you (depending on what is on its gem slots) instead of engaging the enemy with melee or offensive spells. Burn stance will make your merc stay at ranged and cast spells.

Additional Notes

All characters on the account share the same experience gain and inventory, so don't worry about logging in each character to gain experience.
